From the mind of Elphaba Of The Brew | Posted in brew psa | Posted on 03-09-2012
1: of, relating to, or characteristic of the social middle class
2: marked by a concern for material interests and respectability and a tendency toward mediocrity
3: dominated by commercial and industrial interests : capitalistic
Now, I don’t know when it became a badge of honor for the modern Negro, to embrace being “Bourgie”. I assure you the Talented 10th were not sitting around plotting their next Stepford Style Cul de Sac purchase to lord over one another or their next German-made sports car, for that matter. I suppose when any group of people who isn’t used to having anything gets a lil’ something they think it’s cute to be called capitalistic and materialistic. It’s not. Cut it out and have some class about ya’selves- but that just may be the modern day hippie in me, talking.
Let me lay to rest what BOURGIE is NOT:
- caring for your family
- gainful employment
- taking care of your health
- having a clean, well maintained place to live
- eating healthily
- enjoying non “soul” foods
- the pursuit of education
- reading for pleasure
- presenting oneself with class and distinction in the public eye
- wearing your pants on your waist
These are things we ALL as a human race should be striving for. Someone trying to maintain these BASICS, is not BOURGIE. They’re trying to live a productive and healthy life. Got it??
Now, I’m going to go back to searching the ‘net for this year’s Martha’s Vineyard summer share. Ok, now that may be slightly bourgie — even then, know THAT history, son!
I BEAT YOU, BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!
