Last night, the satirical site, The Onion, fired off a tweet that called 9 year old Oscar nominee, Quvenzhané Wallis, a vulgar, derogatory term that I don’t say and certainly won’t type.
The offensive tweet has since been deleted but you know you can’t really delete anything these days. We’ve all got screen capture apps. If you’re as offended, repulsed and upset as I am, join us folks with common sense and groups like the Women’s Media Center, Miss Representation and The Crunk Feminist Collective, in speaking out against this sexist comment directed at a child. Do your part by sending your feedback to The Onion.

You can take it a step further by not doing business with companies that advertise on their site. There’s also a Change.org petition calling for a retraction from The Onion and review of its hiring practices.
So far, I haven’t noticed any mainstream news outlets (aside from online sites) addressing the story, which is unfortunate. Had this been a popular rapper interrupting an innocentish country singer during her acceptance speech, it would be all over the news. Oh, wait…
This morning, the Today Show featured the young “Beasts of the Southern Wild” actress in an interview segment with Meredith Vieira that only reminds us all that she is just a kid who likes frilly dresses and puppy purses. So what, she’s sassy and has a little fire. She’s an actress. Is she supposed to dim her light? We wouldn’t ask a young Natalie Portman, Dakota Fanning, Suri Cruise or any of the 50-11 Jolie-Pitt kids to do that. Let’s not stand for it for our Quvenzhané.

I just want to hug her and send her a puppy purse.
