Big Boi and Andre 3000 gave separate interviews this week about new projects, solo music, their careers and why we still haven’t heard any new material from them as a duo. Big Boi chatted up The Village Voice about how much he loves music (his new album is due next month) and puts it over everything else, going so far as turning down a role on “Sons of Anarchy” to finish his album.
Do you regret turning any of the acting jobs down?
Oh, man. Yeah. I had never heard of Sons Of Anarchy before, and they wanted me to play a recurring role for six months or so. I was supposed to be some big-time dude, I think his name is Pope or whatever. But I was in the middle of this album, and I was like, “I can’t really do this right now.” My brother was looking at me like, “You’re crazy right now,” but that’s how strong my love is for the music.
Big Boi’s new solo project, “Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors,” drops December 11th. When he was asked why we still haven’t heard Andre 3000 on his stuff, he said…
He could’ve been on any song he wanted to. I gave the motherfucker about five songs, but I guess he was just too busy. He said he had to do some Gillette shit [room erupts in laughter]. No for real. He said he had some contractual obligations.
In another interview with Hot 97, Big Boi makes it clear that there’s no beef between the two (but a Witch senses some hesitance in his voice…in my professional, non-degreed opinion).
On the flip side, music doesn’t seem to be on Andre 3000′s “to do” list. He’s got the Jimi Hendrix biopic to promote and, of course, a feature or two (or fourteen) for whatever rapper asks (ahem…except Big Boi). 3000 gave an interview of his own to Fuse and bluntly said the internet is a pool of misinformation when it comes to Outkast.
Can we lock these two in a room and just get it over with? Can they phone in some verses? I don’t know how this rappity-rap stuff works but it can’t be that hard, can it? Sheesh.
